To Live Is To Fly

Townes Van Zandt has been noted as the one of the world's best singer-songwriters. I agree. He was a lyrical genius. His voice and guitar picking soothe my soul while tear my heart to pieces.

Musician Steve Earle once called Van Zandt "the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." (Awesome!)

Though it seems like he was the saddest dude ever, the beauty that he created from his sadness is inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.

Everything is not enough/ Nothin' is too much to bear/
Where you been is good and gone/ All you keep is the gettin' there

To Live Is To Fly - Townes Van Zandt

Won't say I love you babe
Won't say I need you babe
But, I'm gonna get you babe
And I will not do you wrong
Livin's mostly wastin' time
I waste my share of mine
But it never feels too good
So let's don't take too long
You're soft as glass
And I'm a gentle man
We got the sky to talk about
And the world to lie upon.

Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
But don't turn none away
Everything is not enough
Nothin' is too much to bear
Where you been is good and gone
All you keep is the gettin' there
To live is to fly
Low and high
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes

It's goodbye to all my friends
It's time to go again
Think of all the poetry
And the pickin' down the line
I'll miss the system here
The bottom's low and the treble's clear
But it don't pay to think too much
On things you leave behind
I may be gone
But it won't be long
I will be a-bringin' back the melody
And the rhythm that I find

We all got holes to fill
Them holes are all that's real
Some fall on you like a storm
Sometimes you dig your own
But choice is yours to make
And time is yours to take
Some dive into the sea
Some toil upon the stone
To live is to fly
Low and high,
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the tears out of your eyes

Nia Dance Jam

I love Nia.

I wish I could do it everyday of my life for the rest of my life. There is no other feeling in the world like joining up with such a beautiful group of people and letting it all go. Just dancing and feeling good surrounded by energy.

I didn't make it to this Nia Dance Jam but I've been to others and it is amazing. I wish I could have made it to this one. This one was at a new movement center in Forest Grove called Step In Studio.

You can see my instructor Laurie Bass in the beginning and end of the video. She's a wonderful inspiration. You can't help but to smile when you're in one of Laurie's classes!

Friday the 13th - yeah, whatever

So someone came up to me today and was like, "you know it's Friday the 13th, right" and I was like, "Yeah, whatever..."

Happy Friday the 13th!

Summertime and the living is easy

It's that time of year again! There is only about a 3 weeks a year that you can actually swim or hangout in the in water around here and this week is one of them!

I fill up the baby pool in the backyard in the morning and by afternoon it's like bath water! When I get done working there is about an hour before the sun goes behind a tree so I've been diving in at quitting time. It's a nice treat from being frozen to the bone for 9 months.

You may be asking, are those gold fish in the pool? Nope.

Can you figure out what they are? No?

Here's a close up.

Now? That's right! They're baby carrots!

I thinned out the carrots yesterday and pulled the stems off  poolside. I thought it was a great idea to let them rinse in the pool water before I emptied it for the night. After I finished all of them, it looked like a gold fish pond! Swirling it around with my hand makes it look like they are swimming with those weird tails (roots).

Pretty cool optical illusion -- kept me entertained for awhile.

Crash and Derville have become total BFFs. They eat, sleep, and play together. Here's some photos of a typical morning.

Sleeping together in the hand chair. They love each other SO MUCH!

Morning play time

Better watch out or you'll mess around and get your hair pulled!

I call this the Tasmanian Devil game -- makes a helluva ruckus!

They like to take turns being on top ;-)

Now back to separate corners for mid-morning nap time (which lasts until afternoon!).

Not sure how this happened but Crash got my bathing suit wrapped around him like a neckerchief!

I found him napping this way!

What can I say -- he loves his momma!

I'm so thankful for all the ruckus and messes and sweet moments with these two. Derville was such a lost soul without Clancy (we all were), but now he's met the ying to his yang and our lives will never be the same.

Two Against One - Jack White and Danger Mouse

Here's another awesome Jack White track "Two Against One" from Danger Mouse's Rome album.

Favorite line: "The mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun. Lucky for me I'm not the only one."

Make no mistake I don’t do anything for free
I keep my enemies closer than my mirror ever gets to me
And if you think that there is shelter in this attitude
Wait til you feel the warmth of my gratitude.

One, I get the feeling that it’s two against one.
One, I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?
One, The mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun.
One, Lucky for me, I’m not the only one.

And if it looks to me like you in your reflection
Plan to add your own fight to this dimension.
Then tell it that this ain’t no free-for-all to see, there’s only three
It’s just you and me against me.

One, I get the feeling that it’s two against one.
One, I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?
One, The mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun.
One, lucky for me, I’m not the only one.
Lucky for me, I’m not the only one.

And if your foot’s on to sick a thousand “yes men”
Brand or brake into the middle of this little plan…
Then there’s your plan to hear me say,
That I won’t play around the way, anyway I plan to plan around them.

One, I get the feeling that it’s two against one.
One, I’m already fighting me, so what’s another one?
One, the mirror is a trigger and your mouth’s a gun.
One, lucky for me, I’m not the only one.
Lucky for me, I’m not the only one.

Special Delivery! Marley Coffee!

Lively up ourselves!  WHooooo!  The Marley family has started selling sustainable coffee -- check it out here. We got this awesome Marley Coffee from our friend Hassan. He's a sales rep for them down in L.A. He ground up this fine Kingston City Espresso just for us and sent it with love.

And we love Hassan! He's an amazing soul and the kindest kindred spirit I've ever met. Here's a little video of him participating in a drum circle down around Venice Beach.

(Hassan comes in at the 00:30 mark -- white tank, glasses, grey goatie and throwing down the funky thumps!)

Keep beating that drum, buddy! We love you and thanks so much for the goodies!

While the rest of the country is roasting...

We are experience the most glorious weather! The map below is showing cities that have already broken heat records this year. As you can see, no record heat happening here. We're hanging in there with morning temps in the low 60s, 70s by noon, 80s by early evening and then the slow decline back to the 50s and 60s.

This makes for some tricky outfit planning. I've learned to start out warm and peel away as the day goes on. I start the day out in pants and t-shirt with light hoodie and slowly morph into skirt with tank top by afternoon. Then ramp it back up with hoodie and wool socks by dinner time. That's if the sun comes out and we actually hit 80 -- if we don't then pants and hoodie all day long!

It's warmer than usual for this time of year, but we definitely aren't feeling the heat the rest of the country is! Summer is finally here in the Pacific Northwest and I'm loving it!

Crating Crash

We got a crate for Crash thinking that he might like having his own space but before I could even get it out of the box, Derville was all over it --literally! He was climbing it like a jungle gym!  Crash wants nothing to do with it -- I think it reminds him of his institutional life before we found each other.

So we left the crate in the kitchen overnight with the doors open and Derville has stayed in it most of time! Silly pussy. This morning, he was hiding in it, waiting to attack passer-bys (his favorite game) but you could totally see him! It was hilarious. Crash came up and was like, "What's up, man?" and you could tell Derville was like, "Dammit! Foiled again!" So I put a towel over it and this is where we are now.

They are so friggin adorable, but I don't think this "crating Crash" idea is going to work out the way we expected!

Peas Please

We planted gold and green snow peas about a month ago and they have literally gone above and beyond what we had expected. I've added trellis, staked the trellis, created rope trellis and these climbers are still out of control!

Towering over the greens

Leaning on the tomatoes

But, dang these purple, blue, pink and magenta flowers are gorgeous!

We should be picking peas any day now! YUM!
